What Should I Do With My Life?

First – if you’re asking, “What should I do with my life?”; know that you’re not alone.

People all over the world; from various industries, with different incomes, and that come from different cultures; literally ask themselves this exact question every day.

Human beings quickly become comfortable with life and adapt to the status quo and ‘normality’.

Then one day – you look in the mirror or perhaps may ponder from your repetitive cubicle or mediocre current state, and just ask; is there more than this?

Is this really it?

What should I do with my life to give it more meaning?

What Should I Do With My Life?

As mentioned; people quickly adapt to their situation and become comfortable with what they’ve been dealt.

It’s what makes us human, and what has allowed us to get to where we are today as humankind.

The issue with this is; human beings generally don’t like too much change.

Subconsciously, people associate change with pain, and therefore even though we may find ourselves in a situation in which we’re not entirely happy – you’ll find most people still remain where they are without progressing forward.

The fact that you’re asking what should I do with my life is excellent.

It means that you’re over playing the hamster wheel; you know there’s more to life than just existing and are taking steps to learn what that could potentially be.

In this guide, we’ll give you some guidance on what you should look at doing next.

What Should I Do With My Life? – Start With What You Want

Although this may seem like a very simple concept, very rarely do people actually ask themselves the question what do I actually want in life?

What should I do with my life, and what do I actually want in life are two very different questions.

The first, is looking for guidance; it’s coming from a place of uncertainty, and perhaps knowing there’s got to be more than just existing.

What do I actually want in life is a different kind of question, because it provokes thoughts about a desired outcome and state.

If you are where you exactly are in five years from now – would you be happy?

If not, then I recommend that you do two very important things.

The first, is not a sexy topic – but a must if you’re asking what should I do with my life.

This is goal setting.

Secondly, is doing something most people actually avoid; but when you do it, it’ll give you a profound feeling of certainty and clarity on what to do moving forward.

This is called learning about yourself.

Goal Setting

As mentioned, many people avoid goal setting because they find it’s un-sexy.

However – what if I told you, that subconsciously; the real reason people avoid goal setting is because they’re actually afraid they won’t achieve them.

As we mentioned earlier; human beings will do a lot to avoid change, because it can mean pain.

Because human beings like to avoid pain, we’re more than happy to live a boring mediocre existence, versus putting pen to paper and actually trying to define what a happy life would look like.

You’ll probably notice, that a lot of people set new year’s resolution type goals – only for a few months to pass, and nothing truly changes.

That’s because there’s a right way to set goals, and a wrong way.

We want to do it right from the get go.

By setting goals, you’ll have a clearer focus on what you actually want in life, you’ll use your resources better to get there, and you’ll be able to measure your impact on how you’re tracking to achieve them.

What Should I Do With My Life? – Use SMART With Emotion

If you’re familiar with goal setting, you may be familiar with a concept called SMART Goals.

This stands for:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time bound

These are logical guiding points to help you get clear on exactly what you want to achieve, and by when.

However, if you really want to make a positive change; this alone is not enough.

If you’re asking what should I do with my life, you know that you want something meaningful.

This means ensuring that your goals are just something you want to achieve for logical reasons – but to fulfil emotional desires too.

When you anchor your goals with emotion, you give yourself a why.

Why do you want to achieve those goals?

What does it mean if you achieve it?

These questions are generally more important than achieving the goals itself, because it’ll give you clarity on what’s driving you asking the question what should I do with my life in the first place.

It means you’re not emotionally happy with where you are right now – and that you know there is something better out there for you.

Again – I congratulate you for asking the question.

You’ve given yourself to write out a list of goals that perhaps now will give you a more fulfilling life.

Ask yourself these questions when learning why you want to achieve your goals on an emotional level:

  • If I achieve this, what will this mean for me in the short term?
  • How will this affect my income – and what will that mean for me?
  • If it becomes a reality – what will this do for my family?
  • What opportunities will this open for me?
  • By making this happen – how will this help me on a positive note?

Learn About Yourself

Another great benefit of asking yourself what should I do with my life, is it gives you a new opportunity to learn about yourself.

Human beings naturally have our own cognitive biases; we have a perception about our lives and ourselves, and we deep down believe this story.

However, if you truly want to grow, it’s important to be open to learning about yourself in a new way.

Greatness and success only come from challenges and struggle; without those two, you won’t get what you’re looking for in life.

A great tool I’ve personally used, and also ask our students to use; is a personality quiz and test.

What this does, is gives you an interesting insight into the kind of person you actually are and teaches you what you should possibly look at avoiding, as well as what you should pursue more of.

Everyone has a different personality type, and there is no right or wrong.

There just is.

By learning what may be right for your personality type, and getting clarity on what make you happy and unhappy, you’ll better be able to pursue interests and passions that align with you on a deeper level.

16 Personalities is a company that’ll help you with this. No affiliate link; you can do a test for free, and it’ll give you better clarity on what you should pursue.

What Should I Do With My Life – Final Thoughts

Life is short.

Because we wake up daily, and we follow the same routine; only to repeat the same thing day in and day out, we become mediocre, comfortable, and let life pass us by.

The fact that you’re asking what should I do with my life is powerful, because you’ve just given yourself an opportunity to change that.

If you were on a ship, and you’re the captain of that ship – would you try to get to a destination with a map?

Would you just wing it, cross your fingers, and hope for the best?

Of course not.

Then why do we do that with life?

Set goals; but ensure they fulfil you both emotionally and logically.

And further pursue the journey of learning about yourself.

The more you learn about, you, the more you’ll get clarity on what you want to achieve, and what you want to avoid.
